Joseph Parrish

Individual Therapist

Welcome

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Portland dedicated to helping people live in a more open, grounded, and connected way. I work collaboratively with clients to strengthen their innate capacities and develop a sustainable approach to life’s challenges through affirmative psychotherapy. As clients become more grounded, we expand awareness through mindfulness—cultivating a nonjudgmental, present-focused approach that supports more effective responses to stress, greater emotional regulation, and a fuller engagement with life.

About Me

I grew up in the Willamette Valley and was raised on my family’s 150 year old farm, an experience that deeply shaped my values, work ethic, and connection to the land. Although I’ve spent time living and traveling abroad, Oregon has always been home to me and I remain grateful to live and practice here.

Outside of the therapy room, I am an avid outdoor enthusiast. Hiking, climbing and time spent in nature are deeply grounding for me and play an essential role in how I cope with life’s challenges. I value the perspective, resilience, and presence that the outdoors cultivates, and I often see parallels between therapeutic work and the patience and attunement required in nature.

At home, I’m a devoted husband and father. My wife and I are raising our daughter and our household is completed by our dog, Hogan, and our cat, Rosie. Family life keeps me grounded, curious, and continually learning—qualities I bring into my work with clients.

MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY AND MINDFULNESS

I have a strong relationship to the natural world that has influenced and expanded my interest in mindfulness.

Hiking, mountaineering and sitting in nature have given me numerous opportunities to cultivate mindfulness by engaging in activities that demand my attention. Through stillness and curiosity, I am able to be in the present with others, too.

Grounded in this practice of mindfulness, I specialize in working with clients who have experienced various forms of trauma. I incorporate affirmative therapy approaches with clients who identify as LGBTQI.

I have found that the majority of my clients have endured some form of trauma and that by helping them to live fully and completely, life’s challenges can be navigated with a sense of strength and curiosity.

COUNSELING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

I have a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Pacific University. I’ve been practicing as a therapist for 15 years and currently run a private practice. Before licensure, I spent meaningful time working in community mental health, where I supported individuals and families navigating complex trauma, systemic barriers, and significant life transitions. That experience continues to inform my work today, grounding in humility, accessibility, and respect for each person’s lived experience.

My clinical work is strongly influenced by trauma-informed and body-based approaches. I am Level 1 trained in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy and integrate mindfulness practices into my work, helping clients build greater awareness, regulation, and compassion for themselves. I believe healing happens not only through insight, but through reconnecting with the body, emotions, and a sense of safety in relationship.

I approach therapy with warmth, authenticity, and respect, honoring each person’s pace and unique story. My goal is to offer a space where clients feel supported in deepening self-understanding, building resilience, and moving toward lives that feel more connected and meaningful.
